Blades of Steel features several common NES variant types. Among these are all three Nintendo Seals of Quality, indicated on all three components (box, manual and cartridge). There are also USA code variants that can be found on Blades of Steel’s box and cartridge.
A variant specific to Blades of Steel are the two different Konami Classic Series boxes, which makes the game the only third-party NES game to have a Classic Series release. The first box has the partial printing of the Konami logo on the side of the box without the iconic “bacon strips,” while the other box has the full Konami logo.

Some of the more common NES variant types can be found on Castlevania. These include a hangtab box, changes to the Nintendo Seal of Quality, and five- and three-screw cartridges. A unique variant for Castlevania can be found on the two five-screw cartridges. The first cartridge has a larger sized “Castlevania” logo that extends from the end label over to the front label, while the second cartridge has a smaller logo that only covers the end label.

The Legend of Zelda is one of the more complicated NES games to collect variants for. It has a large amount of boxes, cartridges and manuals that feature nearly every common NES variant. These include all three Nintendo seals of quality, trademark symbol changes, the addition of Rev-A, five- and three-screw cartridges, ZIP code changes, USA codes and star codes.
There are also several variants unique to The Legend of Zelda. One of these can be found on the boxes. Earlier productions of the boxes feature a ladder screenshot on the back, while later productions exhibit a water screenshot. There are also color differences on the cartridges. Most of the cartridges have a gold finish, but the last cartridge that was packaged with the Classic Series release is standard grey. Another specific variant is found in the manual. The first print manual refers to the game cartridge as a “cassette” on page 11. This was corrected to “Game Pak” for all subsequent printings.

Mega Man has some common NES variant types, such as Nintendo SoQ changes, five- and three-screw cartridges and USA code changes. Two of the game’s boxes feature Capcom’s Captain Commando sticker on the front of the box, while two others do not. There is also a unique misprint on the first box, which refers to “Dr. Wright” instead of “Dr. Wily.” This mistake was corrected for subsequent printings.

Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! has many variants. Among these are changes to the Nintendo Seal of Quality, five- and three-screw cartridges, and the addition of Rev-A, USA codes and star codes. This game also features a specific variant on both the boxes and cartridges. The first production run has white bullet points printed on the cover art of the box and the cartridge label. However, subsequent production runs changed to orange bullet points.

Rad Racer has several common NES variant types, including changes to the Nintendo Seal of Quality, the addition of Rev-A, five- and three-screw cartridges and changes to the USA codes and star codes. A couple unique variants can also be found on the boxes and the manuals. For example, the first production run of Rad Racer features three daytime screenshots on the back of the box, while subsequent production runs have nighttime screenshots. Also, the first Rad Racer manual is black in color like Nintendo’s black box series of games. Later printings of the manual are silver in color, more in line with Metroid and Kid Icarus.

Super Mario Bros. 2 features many of the variants common for the latter half of the NES lifespan. All three different Nintendo Seals of Quality were used during Super Mario Bros. 2’s production. Meanwhile, there were USA and star code revisions, different manuals either with and without a circled T printed on the cover, and several warranty changes.

Super Mario Bros. 3 has many of the standard NES variant types, as well as some unique ones. There are Nintendo seals of quality changes, warranty changes, USA codes and star codes. Two of the boxes were console pack-ins used for the NES Challenge Set. These boxes have either a gloss or matte finish Challenge Set sticker.
Super Mario Bros. 3 also features a significant design change. The first production run of Super Mario Bros. 3 features a title design with the word “Bros.” oriented to the left. This can be found on the box, the cartridge label, and the manual. Subsequent printings of the components position the word “Bros.” to the right side of the title logo.
