CGC-certified Video Games and Memorabilia See Impressive Results in Heritage Sale
Dozens of collectibles certified by Certified Guaranty Company® (most by its CGC Video Games™ division) saw impressive results in a recent Heritage Auctions sale, including several that realized prices over $10,000. The Video Games Signature Auction presented by Heritage Auctions ended on July 28, 2023.
The top-selling CGC-certified video game in the auction was a sealed Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis (1991) graded CGC 9.4 A+ (lot 28121). An ever-popular title, Sonic the Hedgehog was the highest-selling game for the Sega Genesis and continues to be popular with fans over 20 years later. This CGC 9.4 A+ copy realized $28,800, becoming the second highest-selling CGC-certified copy sold through Heritage Auctions, behind a CGC 9.6 A copy that realized $50,400 in January 2023.
Meanwhile, a Nintendo Power #1 (Nintendo of America Inc., 1988) graded CGC 9.6 (lot 28069) has also become the second highest-selling CGC-certified example through Heritage Auctions, realizing $26,400. Nintendo Power was a monthly magazine dedicated to providing Nintendo players with tips and tricks for their games, news about upcoming releases and interviews with some of Nintendo’s biggest names.
Due to their popularity and content, most copies of Nintendo Power were ruthlessly used and are today heavily worn. Pristine copies like this Nintendo Power #1 graded CGC 9.6 are extremely difficult to come by. This is the only Nintendo Power #1 graded CGC 9.6 in the CGC Census, with one graded higher.
Additionally, a sealed Disney's Ducktales 2 for the Nintendo Game Boy (1993) graded CGC 9.6 A+ (lot 28243) realized $25,200 in the sale. While the Super Nintendo Entertainment System release of this game is difficult to find, the Game Boy release is even more elusive. In the game, players control Scrooge McDuck in his quest to collect the pieces of a treasure map leading to the Lost Treasure of the McDuck family.
Other CGC-certified highlights in the auction included:
- a Stadium Events cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System (1987) graded CGC 6.5 (lot 28046) that realized $18,600
